Five Centuries of Character
The oldest parts of The Battlies date to the 16th century, when the house formed part of the historic Rougham Estate. Its oldest room, the kitchen, retains substantial beams thought to be reclaimed ship timbers, while the later Georgian frontage gives the house its distinctive appearance today. Inside, original character sits comfortably alongside contemporary interiors and modern technology.
Eight Acres to Call Your Own
The grounds are one of The Battlies’ defining features. The heated outdoor pool, open from April to the end of September, sits beside a sun terrace for lounging and dining, with a private tennis court, firepit and barbecue elsewhere in the grounds. Lawns, mature trees and ancient woodland provide plenty more space to explore, alongside a cedar garden cabin tucked away from the main house.
Keep an eye out for the resident peacock and peahen, as well as muntjac deer, hares and birdlife among the trees.
Made for Celebrations and Group Stays
With seven bedrooms and room for up to 18 guests, The Battlies has been designed to handle a full house comfortably. Several reception rooms give everyone space to spread out, while a dedicated cinema room takes care of rainy afternoons and evenings.
At the heart of the house, the large kitchen and breakfast room opens directly onto the pool terrace. A separate formal dining room seats the whole group, with a butler’s pantry and walk-in drinks room making larger dinners and celebrations easier to host.
Suffolk on Your Doorstep
The Battlies sits in open countryside at Rougham, with Bury St Edmunds around ten minutes away by car. Explore the town’s Abbey Gardens, cathedral, independent shops and restaurants, or stay closer to home and follow the walking routes through the neighbouring Rougham Estate.
Further afield, Ickworth House, Lavenham, Thetford Forest and Cambridge are all within easy reach, while the Suffolk coast makes a rewarding day trip.
